A swollen eye looks alarming, and it should get your attention quickly. The eyelid, the eyeball itself, or the tissue around the eye can all swell for very different reasons, so working out which one is affected is the first step.

What might be swelling

  • The eyelid, often from an insect bite, allergic reaction, or minor injury
  • The third eyelid, which can rise and partly cover the eye during illness
  • The eye itself, from infection, glaucoma, or trauma
  • Tissue around the eye, from an abscess, often after a fight with another cat

Common triggers in Indian settings

Cats with outdoor or balcony access face a higher risk of insect stings and territorial fights with neighbourhood cats, both of which can cause sudden swelling. Indoor cats more often react to dust, incense, or seasonal allergens.

Signs that mean urgent care

  • Swelling that comes on within minutes to hours
  • A visibly bulging or cloudy eye
  • Discharge, pain, or your cat pawing repeatedly at the area
  • Swelling paired with lethargy or fever, suggesting a spreading infection

What not to do

Resist the urge to apply home remedies, ice packs, or human antihistamines without veterinary guidance. Eye tissue is delicate, and the wrong home treatment can worsen damage. A vet can examine the eye properly, check eye pressure if needed, and prescribe the correct medication for the actual cause.
