The pearl danio, Danio albolineatus, shares the zebra danio's energetic nature but trades the bold stripes for an iridescent, pearly sheen across the body that shifts between pink, blue and gold depending on the light. It comes from Myanmar, Thailand and Sumatra and grows to around six centimetres, slightly larger than the zebra danio.
It is somewhat less commonly kept than the zebra danio in India but offers a subtler, equally hardy alternative for a keeper wanting variety in a danio shoal.
Tank and water requirements
A group of six or more does well in a tank of sixty litres or more, with good swimming length given how active this fish is. Pearl danios are hardy and undemanding about water hardness, adapting easily to typical Indian tap water.
As with the zebra danio, a secure lid is worth having, since pearl danios are capable jumpers when startled.
Diet and behaviour
An easy diet of flakes, micro pellets and occasional live or frozen food suits them well. They are peaceful, fast-moving fish that do best with similarly active tankmates rather than slow, easily stressed fish.
Their shimmering colour is best appreciated in a tank with good lighting and a dark substrate, which makes the iridescence stand out clearly.

A cover might seem like an afterthought compared to filtration or lighting, but for a saltwater tank it does real, unglamorous work: cutting evaporation, which matters a great deal given how salinity
