Must-haves
A spacious cage or grid enclosure, at least 7.5 square feet for one animal
Fleece liners or paper-based bedding
Unlimited grass hay and a hay rack or holder to keep it clean
A gravity water bottle or a heavy, tip-proof water bowl
A shallow, sturdy food bowl (ceramic resists tipping and chewing better than plastic)
A hideout or two, so each guinea pig in a pair can retreat and feel secure
Small-animal nail clippers and styptic powder or cornstarch
A vitamin C fortified pellet feed, and a backup vitamin C supplement or safe vegetable source
A digital kitchen scale for regular weight checks
Nice to have
Fleece forage mats or snuffle mats for enrichment
Untreated wood or cardboard chew toys
A playpen for supervised floor time outside the cage
A travel carrier for vet visits
Must-nots
Pine or cedar shavings, which can irritate the respiratory system
Wire-bottomed cage flooring, which injures guinea pig feet
Exercise wheels and exercise balls, both of which are unsafe for a guinea pig's spine
Seed and dried fruit mixes marketed as guinea pig food, which are too sugary and unbalanced
Rabbit pellets as a substitute for guinea pig pellets, since they lack added vitamin C
Scented bedding, air fresheners, or cleaning sprays used near the cage
Plastic igloos or hideouts with no ventilation, which trap heat in Indian summers
