A clean litter box is not just about your comfort. Cats are naturally fastidious, and a box that smells strongly to them, long before it bothers you, is one of the most common reasons they start looking elsewhere.

A simple routine that works

  • Scoop solid waste and clumps at least once a day, twice if you can manage it
  • Top up litter as needed to maintain around five centimetres of depth
  • Empty the box completely and wash it with a mild, unscented soap every one to two weeks for clumping litter, or roughly weekly for non clumping types
  • Avoid harsh chemicals such as phenyl, bleach or strong disinfectants. The fumes can irritate your cat's sensitive nose and put them off the box entirely
  • Let the box air dry fully in sunlight where possible, which naturally helps disinfect it and suits India's climate well. Keep this brief rather than leaving a plastic box out for hours, since prolonged harsh sun can make plastic brittle over time

Managing odour in smaller Indian homes

  • A thin layer of baking soda under the litter helps absorb smell without the strong scent of commercial litter deodorisers, which many cats dislike
  • Place the box in a spot with some airflow rather than a sealed corner, since ventilation matters more in compact apartments
  • Choose a plastic box with a smooth, non porous surface, or consider stainless steel, which resists absorbing odour far better over time
  • Replace plastic boxes every twelve to eighteen months, since scratches on the surface trap bacteria and smell no amount of washing can fully remove
