A cat on the counter is not being naughty. It is doing exactly what its instincts tell it to, and the fix is about the space, not the scolding.
Counters are high, warm near the stove, often smell of food, and offer a good view of the kitchen, which makes them irresistible to a cat looking for height, warmth, and interesting smells all at once. Shouting or spraying water rarely solves this for long, since the cat learns to avoid the counter only when you are watching, not that the counter itself is off limits.
Why cats are drawn to counters specifically
Height feels safe, and cats naturally prefer to survey a room from above rather than at floor level
Food smells and occasional crumbs make counters a reliable source of interest
A busy Indian kitchen, often the most active room in the house for much of the day, is naturally where a curious cat wants to be
Warmth from a stove or nearby window makes a counter a pleasant place to sit even when there is no food around
What actually reduces the habit
Give height somewhere else, such as a cat tree, a wall mounted shelf, or a windowsill perch positioned near, but not in, the kitchen
Keep counters genuinely free of food and dirty dishes, since a counter that never has anything interesting on it becomes less rewarding to visit
Use double sided tape or aluminium foil temporarily on counter edges, since most cats dislike the texture underfoot and will avoid the spot on their own
Feed meals on a stable surface at a reasonable height nearby, such as a low shelf, if the appeal is genuinely about wanting to be near where food happens
Reward your cat with a treat or attention when you find it on an approved perch instead, which reinforces the alternative rather than only reacting to what you do not want
A note on consistency
If some members of the household allow the cat on the counter while cooking and others chase it off, the cat receives mixed signals and the habit tends to persist much longer. Getting everyone in the home to apply the same rule, and to make the approved alternative more appealing than the counter, is usually what finally breaks the pattern.
A hands off option worth knowing about
Motion activated deterrents, small devices that release a harmless burst of air or an unexpected sound when they detect movement, are available through Indian pet retailers and can be placed on the counter itself. Because the device, not the owner, produces the surprise, the cat associates the counter with the deterrent rather than with a person, which tends to work faster and more consistently than a human trying to catch every jump in the act.
Almost every calico cat you meet, with that distinctive patchwork of orange, black and white, will be female. This is not folklore, it comes down to genetics, and it is one of the more elegant example
A swollen eye looks alarming, and it should get your attention quickly. The eyelid, the eyeball itself, or the tissue around the eye can all swell for very different reasons, so working out which one
Most cats never need their claws trimmed at all, and clipping can even work against them, since cats rely on their claws for both defence and climbing. As cats age and become less mobile, though, claw
