A once-friendly cat that starts hiding, or a calm cat that becomes irritable, is communicating in the only way it can. Behaviour changes are often the earliest and clearest sign that something is wrong, medically or emotionally.

Types of behaviour changes to notice

  • Increased aggression or irritability, including swatting or biting when touched in a specific spot
  • New hiding habits or avoiding family members
  • Excessive vocalisation, particularly in older cats, which can indicate discomfort or cognitive changes
  • Litter box avoidance or accidents outside the tray
  • Reduced grooming, leading to a scruffy or matted coat
  • Restlessness, pacing, or unusual clinginess

Medical causes to rule out first

  • Pain from dental disease, arthritis, or an internal issue
  • Hyperthyroidism, which can cause irritability and restlessness in older cats
  • Sensory decline, including hearing or vision loss
  • Cognitive changes in senior cats, similar to age-related decline in humans
  • Underlying illness affecting comfort and mood generally

Environmental and emotional triggers

  • A new pet, baby, or house guest changing the household dynamic
  • Moving homes or renovation work
  • Loss of a companion animal or family member
  • Boredom in an indoor cat without enough stimulation
  • Conflict with another cat in a multi-cat household

How to respond

Because pain and illness so often show up first as behaviour change, a vet visit to rule out a medical cause is the sensible starting point, even if you suspect the trigger is emotional. Once health issues are ruled out, giving your cat predictable routines, safe hiding spots, and patient, gradual reintroduction to whatever has changed usually helps behaviour settle again.
