Most cats are far more tolerant of us than we probably deserve, but there is a short list of habits that reliably irritate even the most easy-going cat. None of these are dramatic, which is exactly why they tend to go unnoticed.

  • Belly rubs uninvited: an exposed belly is a sign of trust, not an invitation, and many cats respond to a hand there with a quick grab and bite
  • Loud, sudden noises: cats have far more sensitive hearing than humans, so slamming doors, shouting or bursting crackers nearby, especially during Diwali, can be genuinely distressing
  • Direct, prolonged eye contact from a stranger: a hard stare reads as a challenge in cat language, unlike the relaxed slow blink of someone familiar
  • Being picked up without warning: most cats prefer to see a hand coming and choose to approach, rather than being scooped up mid-stride
  • Strong perfumes, incense and essential oil diffusers: a cat's sense of smell is many times more sensitive than ours, and heavy scents used regularly during Indian pujas or festivals can be overwhelming in a closed room
  • A dirty litter box: cats are famously particular about litter box cleanliness and may avoid it entirely rather than tolerate mess
  • Changing food or furniture layout too quickly: cats build a detailed mental map of their territory and dislike sudden, unexplained change
  • Being laughed at or stared at during a clumsy moment, such as missing a jump: cats often groom themselves immediately afterwards, a well documented pattern called displacement grooming, thought to be a way of managing the small spike in stress rather than any genuine sense of embarrassment
  • Confinement in a carrier without any positive association built up beforehand
  • Punishment after the fact, such as scolding a cat for something done minutes earlier: cats cannot connect delayed punishment to the original action, so it only creates confusion and mistrust

None of these need a complete change in how you live with your cat. Simply noticing when one of them applies, and adjusting in the moment, usually settles a cat that seems inexplicably grumpy for no obvious reason.
