A quiet cat is not automatically an unhappy or unhealthy one. Meow frequency varies enormously between individual cats, and a naturally quiet cat is simply a quiet cat, not a cause for concern on its own.

Reasons a cat may rarely meow

  • Personality and breed: some breeds, and simply some individual cats, are naturally far less vocal than others, and this holds just as true for Indian domestic shorthairs and community cat mixes as it does for pedigree breeds
  • Upbringing: a cat raised around people from a very young age often learns that meowing works well to get attention, while a formerly feral or community cat with less early human contact may never have developed the habit as strongly
  • Preference for other signals: some cats communicate mainly through body language, purring or simply appearing in the room, rather than vocalising
  • A generally content, low-demand personality: a cat whose needs are consistently met with minimal effort simply has less reason to ask for anything loudly

When a sudden change in meowing is worth attention

A cat that has always been vocal and suddenly goes quiet is a different situation from a cat that has always been naturally reserved. Possible causes of sudden voicelessness include laryngitis or an upper respiratory infection, temporary or permanent damage to the vocal cords, or in rare cases a growth affecting the throat. Sudden voicelessness paired with straining to meow, coughing, or general lethargy is worth a prompt vet visit. Hearing loss is a slightly different pattern worth knowing about separately: rather than going silent, a cat that has gone deaf, whether from age or another cause, often starts meowing louder or at an unusual pitch, since it can no longer hear and moderate its own voice the way it once did.

A quiet cat can still communicate plenty

Tail position, ear direction, slow blinking and simply choosing to sit near you carry just as much information as a meow, once you know how to read them. A quiet cat that is eating, playing and using the litter box normally is very likely just a naturally undemonstrative individual.
