Where Should You Place Your Cat's Litter Box?

Where you put the litter box can matter as much as how clean it is. A perfectly maintained box in the wrong spot will still be avoided, so it is worth getting the location right from the start.

Where you put the litter box can matter as much as how clean it is. A perfectly maintained box in the wrong spot will still be avoided, so it is worth getting the location right from the start.

General principles

  • Choose a quiet, low traffic area away from the noise and bustle of family life
  • Keep it well away from food and water bowls, since cats do not like to eat and eliminate close together
  • Make sure the box is easy to reach at all times, with no doors that could accidentally shut a cat out
  • Give the box an open line of sight to an exit, since a cornered box with no visible escape route can make a cat feel vulnerable while using it
  • Once you find a spot that works, keep it consistent. Moving the box around confuses cats and can trigger accidents

What this looks like in an Indian home

  • In smaller apartments, a utility area or balcony corner often works well, provided it stays dry and shaded from direct sun and rain
  • Avoid placing the box in or right next to the kitchen, both for hygiene and because many Indian households keep the kitchen strictly separate from pet areas
  • In duplex or multi storey homes, keep at least one box on each floor your cat has access to, so there is never a long trip involved
  • In joint family homes with frequent guests or young children, a quieter back room or study corner tends to work better than a hallway

Spots to avoid

  • Next to loud appliances such as a washing machine or water purifier, since the sudden noise can startle a cat mid use
  • Damp bathroom corners, particularly during the monsoon, where moisture affects both the litter and your cat's paws
  • Anywhere in direct, prolonged sunlight or near a heat source
