A cat settling directly on your chest, often right as you are trying to fall asleep or relax on the sofa, is one of the more universally recognised cat habits, and it usually comes down to a combination of very simple, practical reasons.

Warmth

A resting human chest, especially near the heart, radiates noticeable warmth, and cats are drawn to heat sources as a matter of course. This is part of why the habit tends to increase during cooler months and drop off somewhat during the hottest stretch of an Indian summer, when a cool tiled floor becomes more appealing than a warm lap.

The sound and rhythm of your heartbeat and breathing

Some behaviourists believe the steady rhythm of a heartbeat and breathing may be soothing to a cat, echoing the closeness kittens experience curled up against their mother. Whether or not this specific explanation holds up, a resting chest is certainly a still, quiet, predictable surface, all qualities cats tend to seek out for a nap.

Trust and closeness

Lying directly on a person, particularly the chest or upper torso, puts a cat in a vulnerable position with limited ability to react quickly if startled. Choosing this spot regularly is a meaningful sign of comfort and trust, similar to other close-contact behaviours like sleeping curled against your side.

Claiming territory

Cats have scent glands on their paws, cheeks and chest, and settling onto you for an extended period leaves a light layer of their scent behind, marking you as familiar and safe. In multi-pet or multi-person households, this can also be a subtle way of asserting a preferred spot in the household hierarchy.

When it is worth managing

For most people this habit is harmless and even welcome, but it is worth gently discouraging if it interferes with sleep quality or if a family member has a cat allergy, since sustained close contact increases exposure to allergens on the fur and skin. A cat bed placed nearby, warmed with a worn t-shirt carrying your scent, is usually enough to redirect the habit without a battle.
