Cats are famously fastidious groomers, so a noticeable smell is usually a sign that something specific needs attention rather than a normal part of cat ownership. In India's heat and humidity, a few of these causes show up more often and more quickly than they might elsewhere.

Dental disease

Bad breath is one of the most common sources of a cat's overall odour, and it is frequently linked to plaque, tartar build-up, or early gum disease rather than anything your cat ate. If the smell is concentrated around the mouth and has a distinctly unpleasant, almost rotten quality, a dental check with your vet is worth booking rather than masking the smell with treats or water additives alone.

Anal gland issues

Cats have small scent glands near the base of the tail that occasionally need help expressing, particularly in cats prone to softer stools or mild digestive upset. A strong, distinctly fishy or musky smell, sometimes worse right after your cat has been startled or has used the litter tray, often points here. This is a straightforward, quick fix for a vet and not something to attempt at home.

Skin and coat problems

Excess oil production, a skin infection, or even matted fur trapping dirt and moisture underneath can all produce a musty or greasy smell, especially in humid coastal cities where damp fur takes longer to dry. Long-haired cats are more prone to this simply because more surface area of fur can trap odour-causing bacteria and moisture.

Litter tray hygiene

Sometimes the smell is not the cat at all, it is the tray. In hot, humid weather, urine and litter residue can start smelling within a day, faster than most owners expect. Scooping daily and fully changing the litter on a consistent schedule, roughly once a week for clumping litter, solves this quickly. A tray that is scooped too rarely can also push a cat to toilet elsewhere in protest, which creates an entirely separate odour problem around the house.

Ear infections

A yeasty or unpleasant smell from around the head, distinct from the mouth, can point to an ear infection, particularly if paired with your cat shaking its head or scratching at one ear more than usual. This needs a vet visit rather than home cleaning, since the wrong cleaning solution or technique can make an existing infection worse.

When it is genuinely urgent

A sudden, strong, unfamiliar smell paired with lethargy, reduced appetite, or visible discomfort is worth same-day veterinary attention rather than a wait-and-see approach, since it can occasionally signal a more serious underlying issue such as a urinary tract problem or infection.
