A little drool now and then is rarely something to panic about. Cats often drool when they are utterly relaxed, deep in a kneading session on your lap, or purring so hard that their mouth simply forgets to stay shut. Some cats drool the moment they are picked up or scratched under the chin, purely out of contentment. This kind of drooling is usually clear, occasional and tied to an obvious trigger.

When drooling is just happy drooling

  • During a long petting session, especially chin and cheek scratches
  • While kneading a blanket or your lap before settling down to sleep
  • In the middle of a deep purr, particularly in very affectionate or Oriental breeds
  • Briefly after smelling something unusually appealing, like a favourite treat

When it points to something more serious

Persistent, heavy or foul-smelling drool is a different story. Dental disease is one of the most common culprits in Indian households, simply because routine dental checks for cats are still not part of most pet care habits here. Broken teeth, gum inflammation and resorptive lesions can all cause a cat to drool constantly, often along with bad breath or reluctance to eat hard kibble. Flat-faced breeds such as Persians and Exotic Shorthairs, both popular choices in Indian cities, are especially prone to dental crowding and are worth watching a little more closely for drool that was not there before.

Heat plays a bigger role in India than in cooler climates. During peak summer months, especially in cities that see prolonged heatwaves, drooling combined with panting, lethargy or bright red gums can be an early sign of heat stress, which can escalate quickly in a shut, poorly ventilated room. Motion sickness during car rides to the vet or while shifting homes is another common, harmless cause worth ruling out first.

More worryingly, drooling can signal poisoning. Lilies, common in Indian gardens and flower markets during festivals, are highly toxic to cats even in small amounts. Everyday household items such as phenyl, mosquito coils, tulsi-based sprays with essential oils, and certain human medicines can also trigger excessive salivation if licked or chewed.

When to see a vet

Take your cat in promptly if drooling appears suddenly, is accompanied by vomiting, pawing at the mouth, bad breath, weight loss or visible swelling, or if you suspect your cat has eaten something toxic. A quick dental check once a year, even for indoor cats, catches most of the treatable causes before they become emergencies.
