Dogs pant after a walk in the park. Cats almost never do, which is exactly why it should catch your attention. If you have spotted your cat breathing with an open mouth, especially during Bengaluru's warmer months or a stuffy Mumbai afternoon, it is worth pausing to understand what is going on rather than assuming it will pass on its own.

Why cats are different from dogs here

Dogs pant to regulate body temperature because they sweat only through their paw pads. Cats manage heat differently, mostly through grooming and resting in cool spots. When a cat pants, it usually means something is pushing its body past a normal response, not a routine cooling mechanism.

Common reasons an Indian cat might pant

  • A short car ride to the vet or a stressful grooming session
  • Peak summer heat in un-ventilated rooms, especially in older apartments without cross ventilation
  • Vigorous play, particularly in kittens chasing a string or laser toy
  • Anxiety triggered by loud Diwali crackers, thunderstorms, or unfamiliar guests
  • Underlying issues such as asthma, heart disease, anaemia, or pain

When it needs urgent attention

If the panting continues for more than a few minutes after rest, or if your cat's gums look pale, bluish, or greyish instead of healthy pink, treat this as an emergency. Laboured breathing, open-mouth breathing at rest, or panting alongside lethargy and loss of appetite are all reasons to head to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately rather than waiting for a morning appointment.

What you can do at home first

  • Move your cat to the coolest, most ventilated room in the house
  • Offer fresh water but do not force your cat to drink
  • Avoid handling or restraining a panting cat unnecessarily, as stress worsens breathing difficulty
  • Keep the cat carrier ready in case a vet visit becomes necessary

The bottom line

A cat that pants once after an energetic play session and returns to normal within a few minutes is usually fine. A cat that pants without an obvious trigger, or keeps doing it, needs a veterinarian's eyes on it the same day.
