Walking into a pet store for the first time as a new cat owner can be overwhelming, with entire aisles devoted to things you may not actually need. Here is a realistic, prioritised list for setting up an Indian home for a new cat, without overspending on extras.

The absolute essentials

  • A litter tray, sized appropriately for your cat, plus a scoop and a clumping litter suited to Indian humidity, which affects how quickly some litters break down.
  • Food and water bowls, ideally kept in separate spots, since many cats dislike drinking right next to where they eat.
  • A carrier, for vet visits and any travel, introduced early as a familiar object rather than only for stressful trips.
  • A scratching post or pad, to protect furniture and give your cat an outlet for a completely natural behaviour.
  • Age-appropriate food, kitten or adult formula depending on your cat's life stage.
  • A collar with an ID tag, even for a strictly indoor cat, in case of an accidental escape.

Genuinely worth having, if not day-one urgent

  • A grooming brush suited to your cat's coat length, particularly important for long-haired breeds through Indian summers.
  • A couple of interactive toys, a wand toy and something for solo play, rather than a large collection your cat will likely ignore most of.
  • A cosy bed, though many cats end up preferring a cardboard box or a sunny patch of floor regardless of how much you spend.
  • Nail clippers designed for cats, since human clippers can crush rather than cleanly cut a cat's claw.

Worth skipping, at least at first

Elaborate cat furniture, a large wardrobe of toys, and premium accessories can all wait until you know your specific cat's preferences. Cats are famously unpredictable about what they actually enjoy, and many new owners spend on items that end up ignored in favour of a paper bag or an empty box. It is more sensible to start with the essentials, observe what your particular cat gravitates towards, and build out from there.

A note on quality over quantity

For the litter tray and scratching post especially, spending a little more upfront on something the right size and sturdiness pays off, since an undersized tray or a wobbly, flimsy scratching post are common reasons cats avoid using them altogether, defeating the purpose of buying them in the first place.
