Honouring a Life: Mourning Rituals and Traditions for a Lost Pet

Human cultures across India have long-established rituals for mourning, yet very few formal traditions exist for pets. This gap does not mean your cat's life mattered any less. It simply means you may

Human cultures across India have long-established rituals for mourning, yet very few formal traditions exist for pets. This gap does not mean your cat's life mattered any less. It simply means you may need to create your own small rituals, and that is completely valid.

Why ritual matters in grief

Psychologists who study bereavement point out that rituals help the mind process loss by marking a clear before and after. A ritual does not need religious meaning to be powerful. It simply needs to be intentional.

Simple rituals many pet parents create

  • Lighting a lamp or candle at the same time each evening for a set number of days.
  • Setting aside a quiet hour to look through photos and videos together as a family.
  • Planting a tree, tulsi, or flowering plant in the cat's favourite outdoor spot, if you have one.
  • Writing your cat a letter, saying anything left unsaid.
  • Holding a small gathering with close family or friends who also loved your cat, to share stories rather than sit in silence.

If your family follows a particular faith

Some Indian families choose to fold pet remembrance into existing family rituals, such as including the pet in a prayer, or lighting a diya alongside those for family members during festivals like Diwali. Others prefer to keep it entirely separate and personal. There is no single correct approach, only what feels honest to you and your family.

Involving children

Children often benefit hugely from a small, visible ritual, such as decorating a photo frame or planting something together. It gives them a concrete way to say goodbye, rather than being told to simply move on.

Give the mourning period room to breathe

There is no fixed timeline for how long you should mourn a cat. Some people feel ready to talk about their cat with a smile within weeks. Others carry a quieter sadness for a year or more, especially around anniversaries or festivals the cat was part of. Both are normal.
