Purring is a remarkable sound, and even now it is not entirely clear exactly how cats produce it. Domestic cats are not alone in this ability either; several of the larger members of the cat family can generate the same vibrating sound.

The behaviour has its roots in kittenhood. When a mother returns to the den, she purrs quietly, a signal that avoids drawing the attention of predators, to let her kittens know all is well, and they in turn purr back while suckling.

Cats will also purr when sick or injured, and there are several theories as to why. The frequency of a sick cat's purr differs from that of a healthy one, and it may serve a healing function, or act as a form of self-soothing at a moment when the cat feels at its most vulnerable.
