A bathtub has a few things going for it from a cat's point of view: it is smooth, cool, enclosed, and sits near a drain, all of which can make it feel like a reasonable substitute for the litter box, especially to a cat who already has some reason to avoid the real one. Fitted bathtubs are less common in most Indian bathrooms, which typically use a bucket and mug or a shower with a floor drain, but cats are just as drawn to these. A large bucket, a wash basin, or even the plain bathroom floor near the drain can attract the same behaviour for the same reasons, so treat any of these as the same problem with the same fixes below.

Common reasons behind it

  • The cool, smooth surface is genuinely appealing during India's hotter months, when a cat may be drawn to anything that feels cooler underfoot
  • The drain and enclosed shape resemble a litter box in a rough sort of way
  • A past experience with a dirty or inaccessible litter box has led the cat to find and stick with an alternative
  • Urinary discomfort can make a cool surface feel soothing, which sometimes points to an underlying medical issue
  • General stress or a recent change in the household

How to fix it

  • Book a vet check first, particularly if this is a new habit, to rule out a urinary tract issue
  • Keep the bathroom door closed when it is not in use, removing access entirely
  • Empty and turn over buckets after use rather than leaving standing water sitting in the bathroom, since an empty bucket is an open invitation
  • Go back to basics with the actual litter box: clean it more often, check the location, and make sure there are enough boxes for every cat in the house
  • If heat seeking behaviour seems to be the driver, offer a cool mat or tile spot elsewhere in the home as an alternative
  • Clean the tub, bucket, basin or floor with an enzymatic cleaner after each incident, since regular bathroom cleaner or phenyl will not fully remove the scent that draws a cat back
