Thinning or bald patches on the hind legs are one of the more common hair-related complaints among Indian cat parents, and the cause ranges from harmless to something that needs real management.

Over-grooming as a leading cause

Cats groom to soothe themselves, and the back legs and belly are easy areas to reach repeatedly. When grooming becomes excessive, it can strip hair down to bald skin, often smooth rather than scabby, which is a useful clue.

What triggers over-grooming

  • Fleas, even a small number, in cats with flea allergy sensitivity
  • Stress or anxiety, including from changes at home
  • Skin allergies to food, dust, or environmental triggers
  • Pain in an underlying joint or organ, since cats sometimes over-groom near a painful area

Other causes of hair loss in this area

  • Ringworm, a fungal infection that can cause patchy, sometimes scaly hair loss
  • Mange or other mites, more common in cats with outdoor access
  • Hormonal imbalances, less common but possible in older cats
  • Skin infections following a minor injury

What a vet visit typically involves

A vet will usually check for fleas or flea dirt, examine the skin texture, and may recommend a skin scraping or fungal culture if ringworm is suspected. Blood tests come into play if hormonal causes are suspected, particularly in cats showing other symptoms alongside hair loss.

When to book an appointment

See a vet if the bald patches are spreading, if the skin looks red, scabby, or has visible sores, or if you notice your cat scratching or grooming that area obsessively. Ringworm in particular is contagious to other pets and to people, so early diagnosis matters for the whole household.
