A cat clearing its throat can look almost identical to a cat trying to vomit, which is why coughing is one of the most misread symptoms among Indian pet parents. Knowing the difference, and knowing what typically causes it, helps you decide how quickly to act.

Coughing versus retching: how to tell them apart

A true cough is a short, sharp, forceful sound, often followed by your cat swallowing or licking its lips. Retching before vomiting looks more like heaving from the belly, usually ending with food or foam brought up. Watching one full episode carefully, ideally recording it on your phone, gives your vet valuable information.

What commonly causes coughing in Indian homes

  • Hairballs, especially in longer-haired breeds or heavy shedding season
  • Dust and incense smoke in homes where agarbatti is lit daily
  • Seasonal upper respiratory infections, more frequent during monsoon humidity
  • Feline asthma, which can flare with mosquito coils, room fresheners, or construction dust common in Indian cities
  • Parasites such as lungworm, more likely in cats with outdoor access

Signs that call for a vet visit

  • Coughing that happens more than once or twice a week
  • Coughing paired with laboured breathing, wheezing, or a hunched posture
  • Blue-tinged or pale gums during a coughing fit
  • Coughing alongside lethargy, fever, or refusal to eat

Helping a coughing cat at home

Reduce exposure to incense smoke, aerosol sprays, and strong cleaning agents in the room your cat spends most time in. Regular brushing cuts down on hairballs. If the cough persists beyond a few days, a vet will usually recommend a chest X-ray to rule out asthma, infection, or fluid buildup, all of which are manageable once identified early.
