White, frothy vomit is one of the more common sights in a cat household, and while it is often harmless, the frequency with which it happens tells you whether it needs a vet's attention.

What causes the foam

The white, bubbly appearance usually comes from a mix of saliva, mucus, and gastric fluid churned together, most often on an empty stomach or during repeated retching. It is different from actual food vomit and does not necessarily mean something serious is wrong.

Common reasons

  • An empty stomach, particularly overnight before the first meal of the day
  • Hairballs that have not fully formed into a solid mass
  • Mild gastritis from a dietary indiscretion
  • Motion sickness
  • Occasionally, the early sign of pancreatitis or an intestinal issue if it recurs frequently

A pattern worth noticing

Many cats bring up white foam first thing in the morning simply because the stomach has been empty for many hours. Feeding a small portion late at night, or splitting the day's food into three smaller meals, often resolves this completely.

When it needs veterinary review

  • Happening more than two or three times a week
  • Combined with weight loss, lethargy, or reduced appetite
  • Progressing to vomiting food or bile as well
  • Any sign of pain, such as a hunched posture or reluctance to be touched around the belly
