Many Indian households take on a thorough deep clean around this time of year, often timed around Holi or ahead of the summer, airing out cupboards, mopping with strong floor cleaners, and clearing out clutter. All of this activity, well intentioned as it is, can put cats at risk if a few precautions are skipped.

Cleaning products worth double checking

Cats are more sensitive to many household chemicals than dogs. Part of the reason is behavioural, since they groom themselves constantly and end up ingesting whatever is on their paws and fur. Part of it is biological. A cat's liver produces far less of certain glucuronyl transferase enzymes, the tools the body uses to break down and clear many chemical compounds. This single enzyme gap is why several unrelated household products, from floor cleaners to mothballs to mosquito repellents, are all riskier for cats than for people or dogs.

  • Phenyl and phenol based floor cleaners are a genuine concern for this reason. Repeated exposure, including simply walking on a freshly mopped floor and then grooming, can cause drooling, vomiting and lethargy, and in severe cases liver damage.
  • Naphthalene mothballs, still common in Indian cupboards and trunks, are toxic if chewed, swallowed or even licked off fur. They damage red blood cells and can cause haemolytic anaemia, with signs like weakness, pale or yellowish gums, dark urine and laboured breathing. As little as one mothball can be enough to poison a cat, so keep them in sealed containers or switch to cedar blocks or sachets instead.
  • Bleach, toilet cleaners and strong disinfectants can burn skin and irritate the mouth and stomach if a cat walks through a spill and later licks its paws.
  • Mosquito repellent coils, liquid vaporisers and sprays are worth a second look too. Many popular Indian brands use allethrin or related pyrethroid compounds, which are effective against mosquitoes precisely because they target the nervous system, and cats are unusually sensitive to them for the same enzyme related reason described above. Use these devices in rooms your cat cannot enter, and ventilate the space before letting your cat back in.
  • Keep your cat out of the room while mopping and allow the floor to dry fully before letting it back in.

Clutter, storage and hidden dangers

  • Rubber bands, string, threads and small decorative items pulled out of storage are appealing to cats but can cause dangerous intestinal blockages if swallowed.
  • Check boxes and bags before discarding them. Curious cats climb into open containers and can get trapped or injured.
  • If you are painting or doing minor repairs alongside the clean, confine your cat to a separate room, since paint fumes and small hardware like nails and screws are hazardous.

A safer cleaning routine

  • Choose pet safe cleaning products where possible, or ventilate rooms well and keep your cat elsewhere until surfaces are dry.
  • Store all chemicals on high shelves or in closed cabinets rather than under the sink where cats often explore.
  • Do one room at a time with your cat confined comfortably elsewhere, rather than leaving the whole house open and chaotic.

A thorough clean and a safe home for your cat are not mutually exclusive. A little sequencing, and keeping your cat in mind at each step, is all it takes.
