Cats are experts at hiding illness, which is precisely why regular vet visits matter more than owners often realise. In India, where access to good feline focused veterinary care varies widely by city and neighbourhood, planning ahead for these visits is worth the effort.

A visit schedule by life stage

  • Kittens: roughly every three to four weeks from around six to sixteen weeks old, for vaccinations and growth checks
  • Young adults, one to seven years: an annual wellness exam, even if your cat appears perfectly healthy
  • Senior cats, roughly seven years and above: every six months, since age related conditions like kidney disease, arthritis and thyroid issues develop gradually and are easier to manage when caught early
  • Cats with an existing health condition: as often as your vet recommends, which may be more frequent than the general guidelines above

Why the annual visit matters even for healthy cats

A yearly exam typically includes a full physical check, weight and body condition assessment, a look at teeth and gums, and a conversation about diet, behaviour and any vaccine boosters that are due. Many common feline conditions, including kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, show few visible symptoms until they are fairly advanced. Annual bloodwork, where affordable, can catch these earlier.

Making vet visits less stressful

  • Get your cat comfortable with its carrier well before the appointment, leaving it out at home as a familiar object rather than only bringing it out for vet trips
  • Cover the carrier with a light cloth during travel to reduce visual stress
  • Choose a vet experienced with cats specifically if one is available nearby, since feline handling differs from general small animal practice
  • Keep a simple written or phone record of vaccination dates and any past health issues to save time at each visit

Regular checkups do not need to be elaborate. Consistency is what protects your cat, catching small issues before they become large, expensive ones.
