Rabies is a subject Indian cat owners cannot afford to treat casually. India accounts for a significant share of the world's human rabies deaths each year, most linked to bites from unvaccinated animals, which makes understanding this disease and keeping your cat vaccinated one of the single most important things you can do as a pet owner.

How it spreads

Rabies is a viral infection of the nervous system, almost always transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, most commonly dogs in the Indian context, though cats, bats and other mammals can also carry and transmit it. The virus travels from the wound site to the brain, and the incubation period before symptoms appear can range from a few weeks to several months depending on the location and severity of the bite.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Sudden behaviour changes, such as a normally friendly cat becoming withdrawn or fearful, or a normally aloof cat becoming unusually affectionate
  • Increased irritability, aggression or excessive vocalising
  • Excessive licking or biting at the site of a recent bite wound
  • Fever and dilated pupils
  • Progressing to disorientation, weakness, seizures, paralysis and, ultimately, death

Once these symptoms appear, rabies is essentially always fatal, and there is no treatment that can reverse the disease at this stage.

If your cat is bitten by a stray or unknown animal

Given how common unvaccinated strays are in India, any bite or scratch from an unfamiliar dog or cat should be taken seriously. Contact your vet immediately, since a booster vaccination and a defined observation period are the standard next steps for a cat with an unclear vaccination history, and prompt action gives the best possible outcome.

If a cat bites or scratches a person

Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for a full ten to fifteen minutes and seek medical attention without delay, even if the bite seems minor. If the biting cat's vaccination status is unknown, a doctor will generally recommend starting post exposure treatment right away, since waiting to see if symptoms develop is not a safe strategy given how serious this disease is.

Prevention: vaccination is non negotiable

Rabies vaccination is legally required in India and is one of the core vaccines every kitten should receive, typically starting around three months of age and followed by regular boosters as advised by your vet. Vaccinating your cat protects not just your pet but everyone in your household, and the cost of prevention is a small fraction of what managing a suspected exposure later on would involve, both financially and emotionally. If you feed or care for community cats or dogs, supporting or reporting to your local Animal Birth Control programme, which combines sterilisation with rabies vaccination for street animals, is one of the most effective ways to reduce rabies risk in your neighbourhood over time.
