A dog can often skip a meal or two without much fuss. A cat cannot, and that difference surprises many first-time cat parents. If your cat has turned away from food for more than a day, this is one symptom where waiting it out is the wrong instinct.

Why cats cannot afford to fast

When a cat stops eating, its body starts breaking down fat stores for energy. Unlike other animals, a cat's liver struggles to process this fat efficiently, and it can build up inside the liver itself. This condition, called hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease, can begin within two to three days of a cat eating little or nothing, and it can turn fatal if untreated. Overweight cats are at the highest risk, but even a lean cat is not immune.

Common reasons a cat stops eating

  • Dental pain, a very common but easy to miss cause
  • Nausea from an underlying illness such as kidney disease or pancreatitis
  • A recent vaccination or minor procedure
  • Stress from a house move, loud construction next door, or a new pet
  • Simple pickiness after a sudden change in food brand
  • Respiratory infection blocking the sense of smell, which cats rely on heavily to want to eat

Warning signs to watch alongside appetite loss

  • Yellowish tint to the gums, ears, or whites of the eyes
  • Vomiting or drooling
  • Noticeable weight loss over a short period
  • Hiding more than usual or reduced grooming

When to act

If your cat has eaten nothing at all for 24 to 36 hours, or has been eating noticeably less for two to three days, book a vet visit rather than waiting to see if appetite returns on its own. This is doubly important for overweight cats, who develop liver complications fastest.

What you can try in the meantime

  • Offer strong-smelling, warmed wet food to tempt the appetite
  • Try a different bowl, location, or feeding time, since cats can be surprisingly particular
  • Avoid force-feeding at home without veterinary guidance
  • Keep fresh water available at all times
