Cat food shelves in India have expanded considerably in recent years, which is good news for choice and slightly overwhelming for anyone standing in front of them for the first time. The right food depends less on brand loyalty and more on your cat's life stage, any health considerations, and, frankly, what your particular cat will actually eat.

Life stage matters more than most other factors

Kittens need noticeably more protein, fat, and calories relative to their size than adult cats, to support rapid growth, so a kitten-specific formula matters through roughly the first year. Adult cats need steadier, calorie-controlled nutrition, particularly indoor cats that get less natural exercise. Senior cats often benefit from formulas with easier-to-digest protein and support for joints and kidneys, since these are common areas of decline later in life.

Wet versus dry: the honest trade-offs

  • Dry food (kibble) is more affordable per meal, has a longer shelf life, and gives some dental benefit through the chewing action.
  • Wet food has considerably higher moisture content, which matters because cats have a naturally low thirst drive and can run mildly dehydrated on dry food alone.
  • Many vets recommend a mixed approach: a dry food base with wet food a few times a week, which combines the practical benefits of both.

Reading a label without getting lost in it

Look for a named animal protein, such as chicken or fish, listed early in the ingredient panel rather than a vague term like meat and animal derivatives. Grain-free is not automatically better for every cat, but it can help cats with specific sensitivities. Avoid getting swept up by marketing claims alone; a formula that suits your particular cat's digestion and coat condition matters more than a premium label.

Brands commonly available in India

Mass-market brands like Whiskas, Me-O, and Drools are widely available and reasonably priced, and work well for many healthy adult cats without special needs. Vet-recommended premium brands such as Royal Canin and Farmina offer life-stage and breed-specific formulas, including options tailored for flat-faced breeds like Persians that struggle with standard kibble shapes. A handful of newer Indian brands have also entered the wet food space with fresher, higher-moisture options aimed specifically at hydration and palatability.

For the genuinely fussy eater

Some cats are simply picky, and it is rarely about stubbornness alone. Sudden changes in food, an unfamiliar bowl, or food served straight from the fridge can all reduce appeal. Introduce any new food gradually over a week, mixed in increasing proportion with the old food, and always warm refrigerated wet food slightly before serving to bring out the aroma cats rely on to decide whether something is worth eating.
