India is home to a large population of community cats, and many people want to help without knowing quite what is safe. Feeding strays responsibly makes a real difference to their health, and it is worth doing properly rather than simply handing over whatever is in the kitchen.

Good options

  • Plain boiled chicken, without spices, salt, onion or garlic, is one of the safest and most nutritious choices
  • Cooked rice mixed with a small amount of boiled meat or fish provides energy and protein together
  • Dry cat food is convenient, has a long shelf life, and is nutritionally balanced. Affordable Indian brands are widely available
  • Plain boiled fish, offered occasionally rather than as a daily staple
  • Fresh water, always available alongside the food, especially in hot weather

What to avoid

  • Spicy or heavily seasoned leftovers, which can upset a cat's digestion
  • Onion, garlic and anything from the allium family, which are toxic to cats
  • Milk and dairy products. Most adult cats are lactose intolerant and this can cause diarrhoea
  • Raw eggs, which carry a risk of bacterial contamination
  • Chocolate, caffeine, and raisins or grapes, all of which are toxic to cats
  • Dog food as a regular diet, since it does not meet a cat's specific nutritional needs

Feeding responsibly

  • Choose a quiet, low traffic spot away from busy roads and clean it up after each feeding to avoid attracting pests
  • Feed at consistent times so the cats in your area come to expect it, which reduces scavenging in unsafe places
  • Use disposable plates or a container you clean regularly
  • Compassion towards animals is recognised as a duty under Article 51A(g) of the Constitution, and Animal Welfare Board of India guidelines direct that resident welfare associations should not arbitrarily stop feeders, though courts have also encouraged designated feeding spots to keep the peace with neighbours who have concerns. This is not legal advice, and rules can vary in practice, so if a dispute comes up with your society, it is worth checking the current position with a local animal welfare organisation
  • Where possible, connect with a local animal welfare group for sterilisation and vaccination drives, which help the wider colony stay healthier over time

A little consistency and the right food choices can genuinely improve the life of a community cat, without putting its health at risk.
