Humping is one of the more awkward behaviours to talk about at a park or a family gathering, but it is a genuinely normal canine behaviour, not a sign of a badly behaved or oversexed dog, and it shows up in male and female dogs, neutered and intact alike.

Why dogs hump

Hormonally driven mounting does happen, particularly in intact males responding to a female dog nearby or in season, but this is only one of several drivers. Excitement, overstimulation, and simple habit are just as common, and mounting during play between puppies, starting as young as three to six weeks old, is a normal part of social interaction rather than sexual behaviour. Stress and anxiety can also trigger it as a self-soothing outlet, and attention-seeking plays a role too, since a dog quickly learns that mounting gets an immediate, dramatic reaction from an owner, whether that reaction is laughter or scolding. The old idea that humping is about "asserting dominance" has been largely set aside by modern behaviourists, who see it as a multi-purpose behaviour rather than a power play.

Managing it without punishment

Since scolding or physically punishing a dog for humping tends to add stress rather than reduce the behaviour, redirection works far better. The moment mounting starts, interrupt calmly with a known cue like "sit" or "off," and immediately reward the dog for complying, then redirect their energy into a toy or a short training exercise. If mounting is a repeated habit around a specific trigger, such as visitors arriving, working on calm greetings and giving the dog a job to do, like fetching a toy, channels the same excited energy somewhere more acceptable.

In intact dogs, neutering or spaying often reduces hormonally driven mounting, though it won't necessarily eliminate humping that has become a well-practised habit for excitement or attention. If the behaviour increases suddenly, becomes frequent and hard to interrupt, or seems to cause the dog visible discomfort, it is worth a vet visit, since some medical conditions can also drive an increase in mounting.

Humping between dogs at a park or gathering

When one dog mounts another during play, it's worth watching the receiving dog's response rather than immediately pulling them apart. A relaxed, wiggly body and willingness to continue playing suggest the interaction is mutual and not a problem, while stiffening, a tucked tail, growling, or an attempt to move away signal that it has become unwelcome and should be interrupted calmly. This is a useful judgement call at community dog meet-ups or when multiple family dogs play together, since not every mount needs correcting, but every dog deserves the option to opt out.
