Why Do Dogs Lick Their Paws and How to Address It?

Occasional paw licking is normal grooming. Frequent, focused licking on the same spot is usually a sign that something needs your attention.

Common Causes

  • Allergies, including seasonal pollen, dust, or food allergies, which are common in India's varied climate
  • A minor injury, thorn, or splinter picked up on a walk
  • Dry, cracked pads, especially after walking on hot summer pavement
  • Fungal or bacterial skin infections, which thrive in humid monsoon conditions
  • Boredom or anxiety, where licking becomes a self soothing habit
  • Joint pain, where a dog licks the paw or leg nearest the source of discomfort

What to Check At Home

Examine the paw closely for redness, swelling, a foreign object between the toes, or a foul smell that can indicate infection. Compare it with the other paws, since a problem confined to just one paw usually points to an injury rather than allergies, which tend to affect several paws at once.

When to See a Vet

Persistent licking, limping, hair loss, or a paw that looks inflamed needs veterinary attention rather than home treatment. A vet can determine whether allergies, infection, or pain are behind the behaviour and prescribe the right treatment.

Managing Licking Caused by Boredom or Anxiety

Increase physical exercise and mental enrichment through puzzle feeders and sniff walks. A soft e-collar or a bitter tasting, vet approved deterrent spray can prevent the area from worsening while you address the underlying cause, but neither solves the root problem on its own.

Protecting Paws on Indian Streets

Hot asphalt in peak summer can burn paw pads within seconds. Walk during cooler hours and press the back of your hand to the pavement for five seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Everyday Prevention

Trim the fur between the toes on long haired breeds, since matted fur traps moisture and street grime and makes fungal infections more likely during the monsoon. Rinse and dry paws thoroughly after a walk in wet weather, checking between the toes where dampness lingers longest.

Using a Paw Balm

A vet approved paw balm applied before a hot weather walk adds a small layer of protection against scorching pavement, and the same balm can help soothe dry, cracked pads afterward, making it a useful year round addition to a grooming kit.
