Why Is My Dog Coughing?

Coughing is one of the most common reasons dogs are brought to the vet, and the sound itself, along with when it happens, offers real clues about what might be going on underneath.

Coughing is one of the most common reasons dogs are brought to the vet, and the sound itself, along with when it happens, offers real clues about what might be going on underneath.

The Main Types of Cough

  • Dry and harsh: often linked to allergies, mild irritation, or early bronchitis
  • Deep, honking cough: frequently points to an upper airway issue such as kennel cough or tracheal collapse
  • Wet or phlegmy cough: suggests fluid or mucus in the lower airways, potentially from infection or, in more serious cases, pneumonia
  • A soft cough followed by a gag: commonly seen with kennel cough, covered in more depth elsewhere in this series

Common Causes

  • Kennel cough and other infectious respiratory illnesses, especially in dogs with recent exposure to other dogs
  • Heart disease, where fluid builds up in or around the lungs, often causing a cough that worsens at night or when lying down
  • Tracheal collapse, more common in small and toy breeds as they age or gain weight
  • Heartworm disease, transmitted by mosquito bites, which is a genuine concern in many parts of India and can cause a persistent cough as it progresses
  • Allergies or irritants, including smoke, dust, and strong household sprays
  • A foreign object caught in the throat or airway

What to Watch For

Note whether the cough happens at rest, during exercise, or after excitement, whether it produces anything, and how often it occurs. A cough that happens when your dog is calm and lying down is more concerning for heart related causes, while one triggered mainly by excitement or leash pressure often points towards the airway itself.

When to See a Vet

  • The cough lasts more than a few days or is getting worse
  • It is accompanied by lethargy, fever, or reduced appetite
  • Your dog seems to struggle to breathe, or the gums look pale or bluish
  • There is any blood in what is coughed up
  • A puppy is coughing, since young dogs are more vulnerable to complications

What to Expect at the Vet

Diagnosis typically starts with listening to the heart and lungs and a general physical exam, often followed by chest X-rays. Depending on findings, further tests such as a heartworm test, bloodwork, or an echocardiogram may be recommended. Treatment varies enormously by cause, from a short course of rest and antibiotics for a mild infection to ongoing medication for heart disease or tracheal collapse.

Coughing and Air Pollution Together

During periods of heavy urban smog or seasonal pollution spikes, otherwise healthy dogs can develop a mild, temporary cough purely from airway irritation, similar to how people experience throat irritation on poor air quality days. This tends to ease once air quality improves, but a cough that persists well beyond a bad air quality spell should still be evaluated rather than attributed to pollution indefinitely.

Senior dogs and those with existing heart or airway conditions are more sensitive to these pollution related coughing spells than younger, healthy dogs, so it is worth being especially cautious about outdoor exercise timing for older dogs during known high pollution periods in your city.

Keeping a simple record of when a cough occurs, morning, after exercise, or at rest overnight, alongside any change in frequency over successive weeks, gives your vet a genuinely useful timeline rather than a single vague description of an ongoing cough at the appointment itself.

Common Questions

Should I be worried about a single cough after my dog drinks water too fast?

An occasional, one off cough after gulping water or food quickly is usually not a concern, similar to a person coughing after swallowing wrong. Frequent or repeated coughing around meals and drinking, however, is worth mentioning to your vet.

Is heartworm disease really a risk in India?

Yes, heartworm is present in many parts of India and is transmitted by mosquito bites, making year round prevention genuinely important rather than a seasonal concern only. Ask your vet about an appropriate preventive product for your area.
