Adorable Dog Breeds with Long Ears

Long, floppy ears are not just an endearing look. In scent hound breeds especially, they evolved for a functional reason, sweeping scent particles up off the ground towards the nose as the dog tracks.

Long, floppy ears are not just an endearing look. In scent hound breeds especially, they evolved for a functional reason, sweeping scent particles up off the ground towards the nose as the dog tracks. The same folded shape that helps with scenting also traps heat and moisture though, which matters a great deal in India's humid climate and makes ear care a genuine, ongoing responsibility for owners of these breeds.

Breeds Known for Their Long Ears

  • Beagle: Perhaps India's most popular long-eared breed, with ears that reach the end of its nose when drawn forward, exactly as the scenting design intends.
  • Basset Hound: Famous for velvety, ground-sweeping ears, calm and easy-going, and increasingly seen in Indian homes for its low-key temperament.
  • Cocker Spaniel: Long, silky, well-feathered ears that need particular attention to grooming in Indian humidity, a popular breed in cities like Bengaluru and Chennai.
  • Bloodhound: Among the longest ears of any breed, historically used for tracking, though genuinely rare as a pet breed in India.
  • Dachshund: Long, soft ears on a much smaller frame, still needing the same attentive cleaning as their larger long-eared cousins.
  • Afghan Hound: Its ears are almost hidden within a flowing, silky coat, striking to look at but rare and demanding in Indian conditions given the grooming and heat management involved.

Ear Care for Indian Conditions

  • Check ears weekly for redness, odour or excessive wax, all early signs of infection that develop faster in humid Indian weather.
  • Dry ears thoroughly after baths, swims or monsoon walks, since trapped moisture under a floppy ear is exactly what allows yeast and bacteria to thrive.
  • Clean gently with a vet-recommended ear cleaner rather than cotton buds pushed into the canal, which can pack debris deeper in.
  • Watch for head shaking, scratching at the ears, or a sudden change in smell, all worth a vet visit before the problem becomes painful.

Long-eared breeds are consistently among the most charming dogs to have around, but in India's climate, that charm comes with a standing appointment for ear care that owners should build into their routine from day one, not after the first infection.
