With more Indian households now keeping both a dog and a cat, or bringing a rescue cat into a home with an existing dog, breed temperament genuinely matters. Herding breeds, sighthounds and some terriers carry a stronger instinct to chase, while other breeds are naturally more easy-going around smaller animals. No breed is a guarantee, but these consistently make the introduction easier.

Breeds That Typically Do Well With Cats

  • Golden Retriever: Gentle, patient and generally low on prey drive, one of the most reliably cat-friendly large breeds and hugely popular in India.
  • Labrador Retriever: Similarly easy-going, more likely to see a cat as a friend than a target, provided introductions are handled sensibly.
  • Indian Pariah Dog: Often raised alongside cats and other animals in mixed Indian households, and generally adaptable when introduced properly from an early age.
  • Pug and Shih Tzu: Both small, low-energy companion breeds that typically show more curiosity than aggression towards cats.
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Gentle and unbothered by other animals, a good match for a calm multi-pet household.
  • Basset Hound: Famously mellow, more interested in napping than chasing, and a genuinely relaxed presence around cats once settled.
  • Cocker Spaniel: Sociable and adaptable, popular in Indian homes and generally accepting of feline housemates with proper introduction.

Breeds to Introduce With Extra Care

  • Beagle: Bred to hunt in packs by scent, and opinions genuinely differ on cat compatibility. Some individuals adapt well, others retain a strong chase instinct, so a careful, gradual introduction matters more than usual.
  • Sighthounds such as the Greyhound, Mudhol Hound and Rajapalayam: Built to chase fast-moving prey by sight, so a bolting cat can trigger strong instinctive pursuit regardless of the dog's usual gentle temperament.
  • Terriers: Originally bred to hunt small animals, many terrier breeds retain a genuine prey drive around cats and smaller pets.

Making the Introduction Work

  • Introduce puppies to cats as early as possible, ideally before four months old, when both animals adapt most easily to each other.
  • Keep the first meetings short, supervised and on the cat's terms, with an easy escape route always available.
  • Use a leash or barrier for initial introductions, gradually increasing freedom as both animals relax.
  • Never force an interaction. Let curiosity build at its own pace rather than pushing the two together.

Temperament varies within every breed, so even a typically cat-friendly dog needs a proper introduction, and even a breed with a stronger prey drive can sometimes learn to live peacefully with the right early handling. Patience during the first few weeks matters more than the breed label on its own.
