Italy's dog breeds range from ancient Roman guardians to elegant companion breeds favoured by nobility, and a handful have found a genuine, if limited, presence in India in recent years, mostly among owners seeking a distinctive large guard breed.

Italy's Most Notable Breeds

  • Cane Corso: A powerful Roman guardian breed, loyal and protective, increasingly seen in Indian homes seeking a large, imposing guard dog. It featured on a 2024 central advisory recommending breeding and sale restrictions, since set aside by the courts, so check current state and housing society rules before buying one.
  • Italian Greyhound: An elegant, small sighthound with a gentle temperament, adaptable to apartment living, though its very thin coat offers little protection in cooler Indian winters or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Neapolitan Mastiff: Enormous, wrinkled and famously gentle with family despite an imposing appearance. Rare and expensive in India, its heavy folds of skin need regular cleaning to prevent infection in humid conditions, and mastiff-type breeds were named on a 2024 central advisory since set aside by the courts, so check current rules before buying one.
  • Spinone Italiano: A shaggy, versatile hunting breed known for patience and an eager-to-please nature, genuinely rare in the Indian pet market.
  • Bracco Italiano: One of the oldest Italian pointing breeds, affectionate and loyal, virtually unknown in India.
  • Lagotto Romagnolo: Italy's curly-coated truffle-hunting breed, low-shedding and intelligent, though still essentially unavailable through Indian breeders.
  • Bergamasco Sheepdog: Famous for its thick, matted, corded coat developed for the cold Italian Alps, a genuinely poor climate fit for India and rare here regardless.
  • Volpino Italiano: A small, fluffy Spitz-type companion breed, cheerful and alert, not established in the Indian market.
  • Cirneco dell'Etna: A lean, ancient Sicilian hunting breed adapted to hot, rocky terrain, a genuinely strong climate match for India on paper, though essentially impossible to source here.
  • Maremma Sheepdog: A large, white livestock guardian breed from central Italy, calm and protective, rare in India and needing serious space.

A Realistic Take for Indian Buyers

Of this list, the Cane Corso is genuinely the only Italian breed with any real, if still limited, presence in India, and it comes with a regulatory check worth doing first. The rest remain specialist imports, appealing on paper but requiring serious effort, and often overseas sourcing, to actually bring home. For Indian buyers drawn to the Cirneco dell'Etna's heat tolerance or the Maremma's guarding instincts, it is worth noting that India's own native breeds, the Rajapalayam and Mudhol Hound among them, offer strikingly similar traits without the same sourcing difficulty.
