Most dogs have brown eyes, so a genuine pair of green eyes turns heads wherever the dog goes, including on Indian streets and in Indian parks. Green eye colour in dogs is linked to reduced pigment in the iris, often connected to the merle gene or to specific coat dilutions, and it is never guaranteed even within a breed known for it. Two puppies from the same litter can have completely different eye colours. Here are the breeds most likely to surprise you with a flash of emerald.

Breeds Known for Green Eyes

  • American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier: Widely considered the breeds most likely to carry naturally green eyes, particularly in dogs with blue or buckskin coats. Both featured on a 2024 central government advisory recommending restrictions on breeding, sale and import, though courts have since set that advisory aside, so check your state and housing society's current rules before bringing one home.
  • Siberian Husky: Best known for ice blue eyes, but green and even one eye of each colour also occur. Huskies are strikingly beautiful but struggle badly in Indian heat, so this is a breed best reserved for hill station homes with genuine cold winters.
  • Weimaraner: Born with blue eyes that shift to amber, grey or green as the puppy matures. A striking, athletic breed still uncommon in India, best suited to owners with space and time for serious daily exercise.
  • Border Collie and Australian Shepherd: Both breeds show heterochromia, meaning two different coloured eyes, sometimes pairing a green eye with a blue or brown one. Both are intelligent working breeds increasingly used for farm and herding work in India, and both need a genuine job to stay content.
  • Catahoula Leopard Dog: The merle gene behind this breed's striking coat pattern also raises the odds of green, amber or two-toned eyes. Very rare in India at present.
  • Dachshund: Dappled or lighter-coated Dachshunds, particularly red or fawn individuals, occasionally have green or hazel eyes rather than the usual brown. The breed is widely available in India and copes reasonably well with the climate in its short-coated form.
  • Pomeranian and Pomsky crosses: Occasionally show green eyes, especially in lighter coat colours, and Pomeranians are widely available and popular across Indian cities.

A Word on Eye Health

Green eyes in dogs usually come from the same dilution genetics that can, in some lines, be linked to underdeveloped irises or a higher sensitivity to bright light. This is rarely a serious problem day to day, but Indian summer sun is intense, and any dog with diluted eye pigment benefits from shade during the harshest midday hours. If you notice cloudiness, excessive tearing or apparent sensitivity to light, a vet check is worthwhile, since these can also be early signs of glaucoma, a genuinely serious condition regardless of eye colour.

Choosing a dog for its eye colour alone is never a good idea. Temperament, exercise needs and suitability for the Indian climate matter far more day to day, but if you happen to fall for a dog with green eyes along the way, consider it a lovely bonus rather than the main event.
