With its glossy mahogany coat and boundless enthusiasm, the Irish Setter is one of the most striking gundog breeds, and one of the most demanding in terms of exercise. This is a breed for owners with genuine space and time to spare, rather than a casual apartment companion.

Origin

Developed in Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a bird-hunting gundog, the Irish Setter was bred to work tirelessly across open ground, locating game by scent and holding a distinctive pointing stance. That working heritage still shows in the breed’s energy levels today.

Physical Characteristics

  • Height: Around 58 to 67 centimetres at the shoulder.
  • Weight: Typically 27 to 32 kilograms.
  • Coat: A flat, silky, medium-length double coat with feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail.
  • Colour: A rich chestnut or mahogany red.
  • Lifespan: Around 12 to 15 years.

Temperament

Irish Setters are affectionate, outgoing and genuinely social, getting along well with other dogs and generally welcoming toward strangers, which makes them poor guard dogs but wonderful family companions. They are also famously exuberant well into adulthood and can be slower to mature out of puppyish behaviour than many breeds.

Exercise Needs

This is a genuinely high-energy breed. Without at least an hour of vigorous daily exercise, an Irish Setter can become anxious, destructive or difficult to manage indoors. A securely fenced garden or regular access to open space for running is close to essential.

Living With an Irish Setter in India

The single-layer coat handles Indian warmth better than thick-coated northern breeds, but the Irish Setter still needs shade, fresh water and exercise scheduled around the cooler parts of the day during peak summer. Regular brushing keeps the feathered coat free of mats and reduces shedding indoors.

Is This Breed Right for You

An Irish Setter rewards an active household with unwavering enthusiasm and warmth, but struggles in a small flat or with an owner who cannot commit to serious daily exercise. If you have the space and the stamina to match its energy, few breeds offer as much joyful companionship.
