One of the oldest toy breeds in existence, the Maltese has been kept as a companion dog for over two thousand years, prized historically across the Mediterranean for its striking white coat and gentle nature. In India, it occupies a slightly more premium niche than breeds like the Pomeranian or Shih Tzu, valued for its refined appearance.
Appearance
A long, straight, silky white coat, dark round eyes, and a compact, well proportioned body define the breed. Adult Maltese typically weigh under four kilograms.
Temperament
Maltese dogs are affectionate, gentle, and thrive on close contact with their family. They are generally friendly with children and other pets when properly socialised, and their moderate exercise needs make them well suited to apartment life.
Grooming
The Maltese's signature coat is also its biggest commitment. Left untrimmed, it needs daily brushing to prevent matting and staining. Many Indian owners opt for a shorter puppy cut, which is considerably easier to maintain in a hot, dusty climate and reduces the frequency of professional grooming needed.
Daily brushing if keeping the coat long
Regular cleaning around the eyes to manage tear staining, common in the breed
Bathing every two to three weeks to keep the white coat clean
Professional grooming every four to six weeks for a shorter, low maintenance cut
Living With a Maltese in India
The coat, while beautiful, offers some insulation, so exercise during peak summer heat should be limited to cooler parts of the day. Dust and pollution in Indian cities can also affect a light coloured coat, making regular grooming even more important than it might be elsewhere.
Health
White coat sensitivity to sun exposure, dental disease given the small jaw, patellar luxation, and a tendency toward tear duct issues are the main breed considerations. Otherwise the Maltese is a relatively hardy, long lived toy breed.
Availability
Maltese dogs are less commonly seen than breeds like the Pug or Shih Tzu in India. Ongoing grooming is the main commitment to plan for, whether the dog comes from a responsible breeder or a rescue.
