A fluffy, fox faced companion that has become one of India's most recognisable toy breeds.
Descended from larger Arctic sledding spitz breeds and shrunk down through selective breeding in Germany's Pomerania region, the Pomeranian carries a striking amount of confidence for a dog that rarely exceeds three and a half kilograms. In India, its popularity has been driven partly by its plush, photogenic coat, though owning one well takes more effort than the puppy photos suggest.
Appearance
A double coat, a fox like face, small upright ears, and a tail that curls tightly over the back define the breed. Coat colours range widely, with orange and cream among the most common seen in Indian homes.
Temperament
Poms are alert, bold, and often unaware of their own size. They bond closely with their family, tend to be vocal watchdogs, and can be territorial if not socialised early. They are intelligent and respond well to consistent, reward based training.
Living With a Pomeranian in India
The dense double coat that suits a German winter works against a Pomeranian in an Indian summer. Access to a cool, shaded space or air conditioning during the hottest months is close to essential, particularly in northern cities. Never shave a Pomeranian's coat to help with heat, since the undercoat plays a role in temperature regulation and may not grow back correctly.
Grooming
Brush at least three to four times a week to prevent the undercoat from matting
Expect heavier shedding during seasonal coat blow, typically around the change from winter to summer
Clean ears and check for tear staining regularly
Bathe every three to four weeks with a gentle, coat safe shampoo
Health
Pomeranians are prone to luxating patella, tracheal collapse, and dental disease given their small jaws. Regular dental care from puppyhood, gentle leash use rather than a collar that pulls on the throat, and weight management all help.
Whether adopted through a rescue or brought home from a responsible breeder, ask for full health records and meet the parents where possible. Well socialised and properly groomed, a Pomeranian makes an entertaining, devoted companion for apartment life across Indian cities.
Beyond the familiar Great Dane and Saint Bernard, a number of large, calm breeds carry the same gentle-giant temperament without quite the same name recognition. Most remain genuinely rare in India, b
