Low to the ground, long in the back, and utterly convinced of its own importance, the Dachshund is one of the most recognisable small breeds in the world. Originally bred in Germany to dig into badger burrows (the name literally means 'badger dog'), it has since become a favourite apartment companion across Indian cities, from Mumbai high-rises to Bengaluru gated communities.

Origin and History

The Dachshund was developed in Germany several centuries ago as a working scent hound, built low and long enough to follow badgers and other burrowing animals underground. That original purpose still shows in its digging instinct and its nose-first approach to the world.

Physical Characteristics

  • A long body on short, sturdy legs, with a deep chest that houses surprisingly strong lungs.
  • Three coat varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. The smooth coat is the easiest to manage in Indian heat.
  • Standard and Miniature size varieties, with the Standard weighing roughly 7 to 15 kilograms.
  • Colours ranging from solid red and cream to black and tan, dapple, and brindle.

Temperament

Dachshunds are bold, curious, and often more stubborn than their size would suggest. They bond closely with their families, tend to pick a favourite person, and can be surprisingly vocal watchdogs for such a small dog. Early socialisation matters, since an under-socialised Dachshund can become wary of strangers or other pets.

Living with a Dachshund in India

The smooth-coated Dachshund copes reasonably well with Indian heat and is a popular choice for apartment living in cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. That said, its unusual build calls for specific precautions that matter more here than the general 'small dog' care advice suggests.

  • Protect the spine: that long back is prone to intervertebral disc disease. Discourage jumping off beds, sofas, or car seats, and use ramps or steps where possible.
  • Watch the weight: extra kilograms put direct strain on the back and legs, so portion control matters more for a Dachshund than for most breeds.
  • Manage the heat: walk during cooler hours, in the early morning or evening, and avoid midday pavement, which can burn paw pads in Indian summers.
  • Groom lightly: the smooth coat needs only occasional brushing, though longhaired and wirehaired Dachshunds need more frequent attention, especially through the monsoon.
  • Keep the mind busy: this is a scent hound at heart, so puzzle feeders, sniff-based games, and short training sessions help prevent the boredom that turns into digging or chewing indoors.
