Long of body, short of leg and utterly unaware of any size disadvantage, the Dachshund brings outsized personality into a compact frame. Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers by tunnelling into their burrows, the breed carries a hunter’s tenacity into modern companion life, and has become genuinely popular in Indian homes for its manageable size and low-maintenance coat.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Comes in standard and miniature varieties, generally 20 to 27 centimetres tall.
  • Weight: Roughly 7 to 15 kilograms for standard, lighter for miniature.
  • Coat: Three coat types exist: smooth, wire-haired and long-haired, each with different grooming needs.
  • Colours: Red, black and tan, chocolate, cream and dapple patterns among others.
  • Lifespan: Around 12 to 16 years.

Temperament

Dachshunds are curious, bold and often stubborn, a legacy of their hunting background. They are deeply devoted to their families, alert enough to make good watchdogs, and generally good with children who are taught to handle them gently.

Protecting the Signature Spine

A Dachshund’s elongated back is also its greatest vulnerability. Intervertebral disc disease is common in the breed, and everyday habits that seem harmless, such as jumping on and off furniture, taking stairs at speed, or carrying excess weight, meaningfully raise the risk of spinal injury.

  • Use ramps or steps for sofas and beds rather than allowing jumps.
  • Support the full body, not just under the front legs, when picking the dog up.
  • Maintain a lean body weight through portion control and regular exercise.
  • Watch for warning signs such as reluctance to move, yelping, or dragging the back legs, and seek veterinary care immediately if these appear.

Living With a Dachshund in India

The short-coated variety copes well with Indian heat, while long-haired and wire-haired types need a little more grooming attention and coat checks during monsoon. The breed suits apartment living comfortably, provided daily walks and playtime keep its hunting instincts and energy satisfied.

Grooming and Health

Weekly brushing suits the smooth coat, while wire and long-haired types benefit from more frequent grooming. Regular ear checks, dental care and weight monitoring round out a Dachshund’s care routine.

For a household wanting a devoted, characterful small dog that thrives indoors, the Dachshund is an excellent match, provided its back is protected with the same care as its considerable personality.
