With so much specific advice available on every individual aspect of puppy care, it helps to step back and see the whole picture in one place. Here is what actually matters most across the areas that shape a healthy, happy puppy.

Nutrition

Feed an age appropriate puppy food suited to your dog's eventual adult size, in small, frequent meals that gradually reduce in number as the puppy grows, typically from four meals a day at eight weeks down to two by around six months. Any diet change should happen gradually over about a week to avoid digestive upset, and fresh water should always be available.

Health and veterinary care

A first vet visit within days of bringing a puppy home, followed by the full core vaccination series, typically every three to four weeks until around sixteen weeks, forms the backbone of preventive care. Regular deworming, usually monthly for young puppies, and parasite prevention appropriate to your region round out the basics. Establishing a relationship with a trusted vet early pays off enormously later.

Toileting

Whether using potty pads, an outdoor spot, or a combination suited to apartment living, consistency of location and timing matters more than the specific method chosen. Young puppies typically need a toilet break roughly every hour while awake, and always after eating, playing or waking.

Socialisation

The window between roughly four and fourteen weeks is the single most important stretch for shaping how a dog handles new people, animals, sounds and environments for the rest of its life. Gentle, positive exposure during this period, balanced against appropriate caution around unvaccinated dogs, builds the foundation for a confident adult.

Training

Basic cues, sit, stay, come, and a reliable name response can begin from around eight weeks, using short, food rewarded sessions of a few minutes at a time. Consistency across every family member matters more than any single training technique, a puppy learns faster when the household rules stay the same regardless of who is home.

Grooming and handling

Getting a puppy comfortable with having its paws, ears, mouth and coat handled early makes every future grooming session, nail trim and vet visit dramatically easier. Start with short, positive sessions well before any actual grooming is needed.

Exercise and mental stimulation

Physical activity should stay gentle and low impact while a puppy is still growing, particularly for larger breeds, but mental stimulation matters just as much. Puzzle feeders, short training sessions and simple sniff based games keep a young mind engaged and help prevent the boredom that often drives destructive behaviour.

Safety

A thoroughly puppy proofed home, covering everything from loose wires to household chemicals to balcony gaps, removes the single largest category of preventable puppy emergencies. Revisiting this check periodically as the puppy grows and reaches new heights is worth the small recurring effort.
