Discovering an unusual discharge or noticing your young female puppy licking herself more than usual can be alarming, especially for first time owners. In most cases, what you are seeing is puppy vaginitis, a fairly common and typically harmless condition of the vaginal area in young, not yet mature female dogs.
Why it happens
Before a female puppy has her first heat cycle, her vaginal tissue is still immature, and this immaturity makes it more prone to mild inflammation. The good news is that this is largely a developmental stage rather than a disease, and it commonly resolves on its own once hormonal changes during the first heat cycle mature the tissue.
Signs to look out for
A clear, milky or slightly yellowish discharge from the vulva
Excessive licking of the genital area
Mild redness or swelling around the vulva
Occasionally, more frequent urination or mild discomfort while urinating
What is usually normal versus what needs a vet visit
Mild discharge with no other symptoms and a puppy that otherwise eats, plays and behaves normally is typically nothing to worry about beyond keeping the area clean. A vet visit becomes necessary if the discharge is bloody, foul smelling, or thick and pus like, if the puppy seems to be in pain, or if lethargy, fever or loss of appetite appear alongside it, since these can point to a urinary tract infection or a less common underlying issue rather than simple developmental vaginitis.
Home care while it resolves
Gently wipe the area once a day with a clean, damp cloth or unscented baby wipe
Keep bedding clean and change it more frequently than usual during this period
Avoid scented soaps, powders or sprays on the area, these tend to worsen irritation
Never apply human antiseptic creams or medications without a vet's specific advice
A word on the humid Indian climate
India's heat and humidity for large parts of the year can make any mild skin or mucosal irritation linger longer than it might in a drier climate, simply because the area stays damp between cleanings. Keeping the puppy's coat trimmed around the area if it is a longer haired breed, and drying her thoroughly after baths or monsoon walks, can help the irritation clear faster.
Telling it apart from a urinary tract infection
Vaginitis and a urinary tract infection can look confusingly similar from the outside, both can cause frequent urination and visible discomfort, and puppies cannot tell you which one it is. The distinction matters because a UTI generally needs antibiotics while simple developmental vaginitis often does not. If a vet visit is needed, expect them to check a urine sample alongside examining the vulvar area, and possibly take a swab of any discharge for cytology, to work out whether the irritation is limited to the vagina or involves the bladder and urinary tract as well.
