Not every allergy trigger comes from outdoors. A surprising number of Indian homes carry allergens quietly building up in carpets, bedding and cleaning cupboards that keep a dog's symptoms simmering long after a walk has ended.

Dust mites

These microscopic creatures thrive in warm, humid conditions, which makes much of India close to ideal for them. They collect in soft furnishings, mattresses, curtains and a dog's own bedding, feeding on shed skin cells. It is their waste particles, not the mites themselves, that trigger allergic reactions.

Mould and damp

Bathrooms, monsoon soaked balconies and poorly ventilated corners are common breeding grounds for mould in Indian homes. Mould spores travel through the air easily and can aggravate both skin and respiratory symptoms in an allergic dog.

Cleaning products and fragrance

Strong floor cleaners, air fresheners and heavily scented detergents used on a dog's bedding can all act as contact or airborne irritants. Dogs experience the world largely through smell, and their skin and airways are more sensitive to these chemicals than we might assume.

Bedding and soft toys

Fabric bedding, cushions and plush toys hold onto dust, dander and moisture unless washed regularly, turning into a slow build up of allergens right where a dog spends hours resting.

A seasonal deep clean worth doing

Alongside a weekly routine, a more thorough seasonal clean makes a real difference for allergic dogs. Just before the monsoon and again just after it, it is worth pulling furniture away from walls to vacuum behind and underneath, washing curtains and cushion covers rather than just surface dusting them, checking under sinks and in bathrooms for early mould growth, and replacing an air purifier's filter if one is in use. This kind of deeper clean catches the allergen build up that a quick weekly pass tends to miss.

A simple home routine to reduce exposure

  • Wash the dog's bedding weekly in hot water
  • Vacuum carpets and upholstery often, ideally with a HEPA filter vacuum
  • Choose unscented, pet safe detergents and cleaners
  • Run a dehumidifier or keep rooms well ventilated during the monsoon
  • Wipe the dog's paws and coat after outdoor time to stop allergens travelling indoors
