Walk duration gets asked about far more precisely than it can honestly be answered. The right length depends on your dog's breed, age, fitness and the weather on any given day, more than any fixed number of minutes.

A reasonable starting range

As a general guide, most adult dogs do well with thirty to sixty minutes of walking a day, split across two outings rather than one long one. High-energy breeds may want more, closer to sixty to ninety minutes, while small or brachycephalic breeds often do better with several shorter walks of ten to fifteen minutes rather than one long stretch.

Puppies need less than you might expect

Over-walking a puppy can strain still-developing joints. A commonly used rule of thumb is roughly five minutes of structured walking per month of age, twice a day, so a four-month-old puppy would manage about twenty minutes per walk. Free play in a safe, enclosed space is a better outlet for extra puppy energy than a long structured walk.

Senior dogs, and reading the signs

Older dogs generally still benefit from daily walks, just shorter and gentler, adjusted around arthritis or reduced stamina. Watch your dog's own signals rather than sticking rigidly to any number, if they are pulling ahead eagerly, they likely have more in them, and if they are lagging, panting heavily or sitting down mid-walk, it is time to head home regardless of the clock.

Adjusting for Indian conditions

Heat and humidity change the calculation considerably. A thirty-minute walk at 7 a.m. is a very different experience from the same walk at 1 p.m. in peak summer. On very hot or humid days, shortening the walk and adding an indoor play session is a reasonable trade, rather than pushing through a full walk your dog is visibly struggling with.

There is no perfect universal number. A consistent daily walk, adjusted for your specific dog and the day's weather, matters far more than hitting an exact minute count.

Adjusting walk length for multi-dog households

If you walk more than one dog together, remember that the ideal duration for each may genuinely differ, a young, energetic dog and an older, slower one paired on the same walk often means one is under-exercised and the other over-exercised. Where possible, give each dog at least some individual walk time suited to their own pace and needs, even if most walks happen together, rather than defaulting to whatever length suits the most demanding dog in the group.
