Vitamin D has a reputation as a harmless, even beneficial, supplement, which is exactly what makes it dangerous around dogs. The gap between a healthy dose and a toxic one is small, and the sources of excess vitamin D are more common in an average Indian home than most owners expect.
Why vitamin D becomes dangerous
In normal amounts, vitamin D helps the body regulate calcium and phosphorus. In excess, it does the opposite of what is intended: calcium is pulled aggressively from the gut and bones into the bloodstream, leading to dangerously high blood calcium levels, or hypercalcaemia. This, in turn, damages the kidneys, heart and gastrointestinal tract, sometimes permanently.
Common sources of excess vitamin D
Cholecalciferol-based rat poison, one of the most potent and dangerous sources, requiring only a small ingested amount to cause serious harm
Human vitamin D and multivitamin supplements, especially chewable or gummy versions a dog may eat as if they were a treat
Psoriasis creams and ointments containing vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriene, which can poison a dog that licks a person's skin or chews into the tube
Poorly formulated commercial or home-prepared dog food with excessive vitamin D content
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity
Signs typically begin 12 to 36 hours after ingestion, though they can appear sooner with very high doses.
Vomiting and loss of appetite
Increased thirst and urination
Weakness and lethargy
Abdominal pain
Muscle tremors, in more severe cases
Signs of kidney failure over the following days if untreated
What to do
Any known ingestion of vitamin D rodenticide, a supplement bottle, or a psoriasis cream calls for an immediate call to your vet, even before symptoms appear, since the delay between ingestion and visible illness can mean real damage is already underway. Bring the packaging or bottle with you so the vet can work out the dose involved. Treatment usually involves inducing vomiting if the ingestion was recent, followed by intravenous fluids and medication to bring blood calcium down, with repeated blood tests to track kidney function over the following days.
Prevention
Store your own vitamin D and multivitamin supplements in a closed cabinet, well out of paw's reach, especially if they come in chewable form. If anyone in the house uses a psoriasis cream, keep it away from surfaces your dog can access and wash your hands and any exposed skin after applying it. If you use rat poison at home, choose the type and placement carefully, since cholecalciferol-based rodenticide is one of the most dangerous substances an Indian dog is likely to encounter.
