Mosquitoes are an unavoidable part of the Indian monsoon and post monsoon months, and while most pet parents worry about the diseases they can transmit, fewer realise that the bites themselves can trigger a genuine allergic reaction in some dogs.
What happens during a bite
When a mosquito bites, it injects a small amount of saliva containing anticoagulant proteins to keep the blood flowing. In most dogs this causes a mild, short lived itch. In sensitive dogs, the immune system overreacts to these proteins, releasing histamine and producing a much stronger response, sometimes described as skeeter syndrome.
Signs of a hypersensitive reaction
Noticeable swelling around the bite site, sometimes spreading across the muzzle or face
Redness and heat around the eyes or ears
Intense itching well beyond a normal mosquito bite
Hives or raised bumps in thinly haired areas such as the belly and inner thighs
In more sensitive dogs, visible discomfort or restlessness soon after being outdoors at dawn or dusk
Why this matters beyond the itch
Mosquitoes are also the carriers of canine heartworm disease, transmitted through the same bite that can trigger the allergic reaction. A dog showing repeated swelling or hypersensitivity after mosquito exposure is a good reminder to check that heartworm prevention is up to date, alongside managing the allergy itself.
A note on heartworm risk in India
Heartworm disease is less widely reported in India than in some other countries, but confirmed cases do occur, particularly in warmer, coastal and mosquito dense regions. Because it is under-tested rather than genuinely rare, many vets now recommend routine heartworm prevention as a precaution rather than something to consider only after a diagnosis. A dog with a known mosquito bite hypersensitivity is a good candidate for this conversation with the vet, since the same exposure driving the itching is also the exposure that carries the disease.
Reducing exposure and reaction
Keep dogs indoors during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active
Use vet approved mosquito repellent products made specifically for dogs, never human repellents
Fit mesh screens on windows and reduce standing water around the home, a simple step that also protects the household
Ask the vet about antihistamines for dogs with a known sensitivity before the monsoon sets in
Watch thinly haired areas like the belly, ears and muzzle closely during peak mosquito months
