With smoking, chewing tobacco and vaping all common in India, nicotine is a household hazard that many dog owners do not think twice about. Dogs are considerably more sensitive to nicotine than humans, and what counts as a minor lapse for a person, like a dropped cigarette butt, can be a genuine medical emergency for a dog.
Common sources of nicotine at home
Cigarettes, beedis and cigars, including used butts, which retain a meaningful amount of nicotine
Chewing tobacco and gutka products
Nicotine gums and patches used for quitting smoking
E-cigarette and vape liquid, which is especially concentrated and dangerous, even in small quantities
Loose tobacco and ashtray contents
Why nicotine is dangerous to dogs
Nicotine acts quickly on the nervous system, first stimulating it and then, in higher doses, suppressing it. Because dogs are small relative to the concentrated nicotine in products like vape liquid or chewing tobacco, even amounts that seem trivial to a human can be a toxic dose for a dog. Symptoms often appear within 15 minutes to an hour of ingestion.
Symptoms of nicotine poisoning
Vomiting and drooling, often the first signs
Restlessness, agitation or hyperactivity
Rapid breathing and a fast heart rate
Muscle twitching or tremors
Weakness and wobbliness
In severe cases, seizures, slowed heart rate, and breathing failure as the nervous system moves from overstimulation to depression
What to do
Treat any nicotine ingestion, especially vape liquid or chewing tobacco, as an emergency and contact your vet immediately, describing the product and roughly how much may have been consumed. Because symptoms can progress quickly from overstimulation to dangerous suppression of breathing and heart rate, dogs with significant exposure are usually monitored closely at a clinic for several hours even if early signs seem mild. There is no specific antidote, so treatment focuses on decontamination and supportive care such as intravenous fluids and management of tremors or seizures.
Prevention
Keep cigarettes, tobacco products and e-liquid completely out of reach, do not leave ashtrays where a dog can nose through them, and be aware that discarded butts on walks are a real and easily overlooked risk. If anyone at home vapes, store the liquid, especially opened or flavoured cartridges, in a closed cabinet rather than on a table or counter.
