India's warm, humid climate is close to ideal for parasites, which is why tick and worm prevention is not an optional extra for Indian dogs, it is basic maintenance. Understanding the difference between external and internal parasites, and knowing what to watch for, makes prevention far less confusing.

External parasites: ticks, fleas and mites

The brown dog tick is by far the most significant external parasite for Indian dogs, and it carries two serious tick-borne illnesses, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis, both of which are common across the country and can be fatal if untreated. Watch for visible ticks around the ears, neck and between the toes, along with fever, lethargy, pale or yellowish gums, loss of appetite and occasional nosebleeds. Fleas cause intense itching, hair loss and small scabs, particularly along the back and tail base.

Mange is caused by microscopic mites and comes in two forms that are easy to confuse but treated differently. Sarcoptic mange is intensely itchy, spreads quickly, and is contagious to other dogs and even to people, so affected dogs need to be isolated during treatment. Demodectic mange causes patchy hair loss with far less itching, is not contagious, and usually points to an underlying weak immune system, often seen in puppies or unwell older dogs. A vet will confirm which type it is with a simple skin scraping before deciding on treatment, so do not assume one and self-treat.

Internal parasites: worms and giardia

Roundworms and hookworms are extremely common in Indian puppies, often passed from mother to pup, and can cause a pot-bellied appearance, poor growth, diarrhoea and visible worms in the stool. Tapeworms show up as small rice-like segments near the tail or in bedding. Giardia, a microscopic parasite picked up from contaminated water or soil, causes soft, greasy stool and intermittent digestive upset. Heartworm is less common in India than in some countries but does occur in certain regions, so it is worth asking your vet whether preventive cover is advisable where you live.

Symptoms that should prompt a parasite check

  • Constant scratching, licking or hair loss
  • Visible ticks, fleas or flea dirt (small black specks) in the coat
  • A bloated or pot-bellied appearance, especially in puppies
  • Worms or worm segments visible in stool
  • Dragging the bottom along the ground
  • Pale gums, lethargy or unexplained fever

Treatment and prevention that actually works in India

Follow a regular deworming schedule set by your vet, typically more frequent for puppies and tapering to every three months for adults. Use a tick and flea preventive suited to India's climate, chewable tablets, spot-on treatments and collars all work, but effectiveness and duration vary, so ask your vet which suits your dog's lifestyle and how often your area sees ticks. Keep garden areas trimmed, wash bedding regularly on a hot cycle, and be especially vigilant just before and during the monsoon, when tick and flea populations surge.

Parasite control is one of those unglamorous jobs that pays off precisely because nothing dramatic happens. A dog on a consistent prevention routine rarely ends up as a tick fever emergency.

Treating the environment, not just the dog

Parasite control that stops at your dog's skin often fails, because ticks, fleas and their eggs also live in bedding, carpets, cracks in flooring and outdoor resting spots. Wash your dog's bedding weekly on a hot cycle during high-risk months, vacuum floors and furniture regularly, and treat outdoor kennel areas or balconies your dog frequents if ticks have been a recurring problem. A dog can be perfectly treated and still pick up a fresh infestation within days if the environment around them was never addressed at the same time. This is particularly relevant in multi-pet households, where an infestation on one animal can quickly spread to others sharing the same bedding, furniture and floor space, undoing individual treatment efforts if the shared environment is left unaddressed.
