Beyond the everyday cleaning products already covered elsewhere, Indian homes and garages hold a second layer of chemical hazards that owners tend to overlook simply because they are not thought of as pet-related items at all.

Antifreeze and coolant

Ethylene glycol-based coolant, used in cars and generators, has a sweet taste that dogs find genuinely appealing, which makes it one of the most dangerous substances in a garage. Even a small amount can cause fatal kidney failure, and symptoms can look deceptively mild at first, appearing almost like drunkenness before the dog seems to improve, only for kidney failure to set in a day or two later. Any known exposure is a genuine emergency, whether or not the dog looks unwell yet.

Mothballs

Naphthalene mothballs, a fixture in many Indian wardrobes and storage trunks, are toxic if chewed or swallowed, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, and in more serious cases, damage to red blood cells and the liver. Their small size and slightly sweet smell make them an easy target for a curious dog rummaging through a cupboard.

Paint, varnish and thinner

Paint and varnish, particularly older or industrial formulations, can cause mouth and stomach irritation, and thinners and solvents carry both a poisoning risk if swallowed and a lung injury risk if inhaled or aspirated after vomiting. This is especially relevant during home renovation or repainting, when tins, brushes and rags are often left within a dog's reach.

Fertilisers and pesticides

Garden and farm chemicals, including granular fertiliser, weed killer and insecticide, are toxic in a range of ways depending on the product, from stomach upset to more serious neurological effects. Dogs on farms or with garden access are particularly at risk, and freshly treated soil or lawns should be kept off-limits until the product label's safe re-entry time has passed.

Glue, especially expanding construction adhesives

Certain construction adhesives expand and harden once swallowed, using the moisture and warmth of the stomach much as they would on a building site, which can cause a serious and sometimes surgical blockage. Regular household glue is generally less dangerous but can still cause stomach upset in any quantity.

Symptoms to watch for across these chemicals

  • Vomiting and drooling
  • Disorientation or wobbliness
  • Lethargy
  • Difficulty breathing, particularly with inhaled fumes
  • Signs of kidney trouble, such as increased or decreased urination, appearing a day or two after exposure to coolant
  • A hard, painful or bloated abdomen if a substance has expanded or blocked the gut

What to do

Treat any known exposure to these chemicals as an emergency and contact your vet immediately with the product name and approximate amount involved. Do not induce vomiting for anything corrosive, petroleum-based, or likely to cause aspiration injury, unless your vet specifically instructs you to. Store all of these items in a garage cabinet or high shelf, and clean up spills, drips and rags immediately rather than leaving them to deal with later.
