Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, and slightly nerve-wracking when the first vet visit looms. Knowing what to expect helps you walk in prepared instead of anxious, for both your sake and your puppy's.
When to schedule it
Ideally, book your puppy's first vet visit within a few days of bringing them home, and certainly before introducing them to other dogs or shared spaces like a building compound or park, since puppies are especially vulnerable to serious viral illnesses before their vaccination series is complete.
What the vet will check
A full physical examination, including heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth and abdomen
Weight and body condition, to help plan feeding and track healthy growth
A check for external parasites like fleas and ticks, and often a stool sample to check for internal worms
A review of any vaccinations already given, if your puppy came from a breeder or shelter
The vaccination schedule you can expect
Most Indian vets follow a schedule starting around six to eight weeks of age, with the first core vaccine covering distemper and parvovirus, two of the most serious and common threats to unvaccinated puppies in India. Boosters typically follow every three to four weeks until around sixteen weeks, with the rabies vaccine usually introduced around twelve weeks, timing your vet will confirm based on your puppy's health and local guidance. Deworming usually starts even earlier and continues on a regular schedule through the puppy's first year.
After the appointment
Mild sleepiness or a slightly reduced appetite for a day after vaccination is normal and not a cause for concern. A small, firm lump at the injection site that fades within a week is also common. Contact your vet promptly if you notice repeated vomiting, facial swelling, difficulty breathing or unusual lethargy, since these can signal a rare allergic reaction.
Bring a list of questions, however basic they feel. A good vet expects a new puppy parent to ask about feeding amounts, house training, socialisation timing and anything else on your mind. There is no such thing as a silly first question.
Choosing the right first vet for your puppy
The relationship with your puppy's first vet often continues for years, so it is worth a small amount of research before booking. Ask other pet parents in your building or neighbourhood for recommendations, check whether the clinic offers after-hours emergency guidance or a referral hospital they work with, and pay attention to how the staff handle your puppy during that first visit, calm, unhurried handling at eight weeks old tends to predict a good long-term fit far better than proximity or price alone.
