India's Favourite Fruit, Shared Carefully

Few fruits are as loved in India as the mango, and it is only natural that dog owners want to share a slice of Alphonso or Kesar with their pet through the summer season. The good news is that mango flesh is safe for dogs in moderation, though the fruit has a few parts that need to stay well out of reach.

The Benefits

  • High in vitamins A, C, E and B6
  • Contains fibre and antioxidants
  • A naturally sweet treat that most dogs enjoy

What to Remove Before Feeding

  • The seed or pit: this is the biggest risk. It is a serious choking hazard and can cause a life threatening intestinal blockage if swallowed. The pit also contains small amounts of a compound that can release cyanide, though the greater danger of swallowing it lies in the blockage risk
  • The skin: tough and difficult for dogs to digest, best removed before serving
  • Any stem or leaf material

How to Serve Mango Safely

Peel the mango, remove the pit completely, and cut the flesh into small, bite sized pieces suited to your dog's size. Fresh, ripe mango, offered plain, is the safest way to share this fruit.

Why Mango Pickle, Aam Papad and Dried Mango Are Off the Menu

Indian households often keep mango in forms dogs should never eat. Mango pickle, or achaar, is loaded with oil, salt and spices that can upset a dog's stomach or worse. Aam papad and other dried mango sweets are concentrated in sugar and sometimes carry added preservatives. If you want to share mango with your dog, stick to fresh fruit only.

A Lesser Known Risk: Skin Contact

Mango skin contains a compound related to urushiol, the same irritant family found in poison ivy, and in rare cases it can cause an allergic skin reaction around a dog's mouth or lips on contact, even without swallowing any skin. If you notice redness, swelling or itching around your dog's mouth after they have been near mango peel, keep them away from it going forward and mention it to your vet.

Portion Guidance

Mango should be treated as an occasional snack rather than a regular addition to meals, kept within about 10 percent of daily calories. A few small cubes are plenty for most dogs; there is no need to offer more in one sitting.

If Your Dog Swallows a Mango Seed

If your dog manages to swallow a mango pit whole, or you suspect they have, contact your veterinarian promptly. Signs of a blockage include vomiting, loss of appetite, straining, or a swollen abdomen, and this situation is usually treated as an emergency.
