Cooked salmon is a genuinely good protein source for dogs, rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support skin, coat, and joint health, and it is a common ingredient in commercial diets for exactly this reason. Raw salmon is a different story.

Why raw salmon is a real risk

Raw salmon, particularly from the Pacific Northwest region of North America, can carry Neorickettsia helminthoeca, a parasite-borne bacterium responsible for salmon poisoning disease, which is frequently fatal if untreated. This specific pathogen is tied to a particular fluke found mainly in that region, so the geographic risk is lower for salmon sourced and farmed elsewhere, but raw and undercooked fish more broadly still carries a risk of other parasites and bacteria such as Salmonella, and the general veterinary advice is to avoid raw fish for dogs regardless of source.

Serving cooked salmon safely

Bake, steam, or grill salmon plainly, with no butter, oil, salt, or seasoning, and check thoroughly for bones before serving, since fish bones are small, sharp, and a genuine choking and internal injury risk. Skin can be given in small amounts if it is well cooked and not seasoned, though it is fattier and best kept minimal for dogs prone to weight gain or pancreatitis.

How much and how often

Cooked, boneless salmon a couple of times a week as part of a varied protein rotation, or as an occasional addition to a base diet, is a reasonable amount for most dogs. It should not become the sole protein source without checking the overall diet remains balanced, since fish alone does not provide everything a complete diet needs. Farmed salmon widely available in Indian supermarkets and fish markets is a practical, generally reliable source when bought fresh and cooked promptly.

Canned salmon as a convenient option

Plain canned salmon packed in water, with no added salt, oil, or seasoning, is a convenient alternative to cooking fresh fish and is widely available in Indian supermarkets. The canning process softens the small bones enough that they are generally considered safe to eat along with the flesh, unlike the bones in freshly cooked salmon, which should still be removed. Rinse canned salmon briefly to reduce surface sodium before serving, and check the label carefully, since some canned fish products are packed in oil or brine rather than plain water, both of which are less suitable for regular feeding.
